Version Release Date Details 4 10/23/2020 No changes were made to the document content for this revision. The primary purpose of the update is to ensure that customers are aware of the issue and take action, immediately if action has not already been taken. 3 03/09/2020 Removed "MSA" from the Scope section. 2 12/17/2019 The Resolution section was revised regarding the StoreVirtual 3200 and 4335 customers. 1 12/09/2019 Original Document Release. IMPORTANT : This HPD8 firmware is considered a critical fix and is required to address the issue detailed below. HPE strongly recommends immediate application of this critical fix. Neglecting to update to SSD firmware version HPD8 will result in drive failure and data loss at 32,768 hours of operation and require restoration of data from backup in non-fault tolerance, such as RAID 0 and in fault tolerance RAID mode if more drives fail than what is supported by the fault tolerance RAID mode of the logical drive. HPE was notified by a Solid State Drive (SSD) supplier of a firmware defect affecting certain SAS models listed in the Scope section. This issue affects SAS SSD models with an HPE firmware version prior to HPD8 that results in SSD failure at 32,768 hours of operation (in other words, 3 years, 270 days, 8 hours). Neither the SSD, nor the data, can be recovered after the SSD failure occurs. In addition, SSDs which were put into service at the same time will likely fail nearly simultaneously. To determine power-on hours, refer to the Resolution section of this document. To determine drive models that are installed in the StoreVirtual 3200: In the StoreVirtual Management Console (SVMC), navigate to the Disks section of the HPE StoreVirtual Management Console. The Disks Overview window displays the list of drives and related information. To determine drive models that are installed in the StoreVirtual 4335 Hybrid: In the Centralized Management Console, navigation window, select your HPE StoreVirtual 4335 storage system. In the tree below, select Storage . Select the Disk Setup tab. On the HPE StoreVirtual 3200, check for any of these drive models: MO0400JFFCF, MO0800JFFCH, MO1600JFFCK, MO3200JFFCL. On the HPE StoreVirtual 4335 Hybrid Storage, only model MO0400JFFCF is supported.
This issue affects any of the following SAS SSD models running a drive firmware version earlier than HPD8 and installed in an HPE StoreVirtual 3200 or 4335 Hybrid Storage array: HPE Model Number Model Description Platform(s) MO0400JFFCF HPE 400GB 12G SAS MIXED USE SSD 4335 Hybrid, SV3200 MO0800JFFCH HPE 800GB 12G SAS MIXED USE SSD SV3200 MO1600JFFCK HPE 1.6TB 12G SAS MIXED USE SSD SV3200 MO3200JFFCL HPE 3.2TB 12G SAS MIXED USE SSD SV3200
StoreVirtual 3200 customers: Immediately apply Patch 100-027-00. This patch is applicable only to StoreVirtual OS version 13.6. Customers on versions earlier than 13.6 must update to 13.6 before applying the patch. StoreVirtual 4335 customers: Immediately apply Patch 10208-00 or directly install the Online Flash Components with the Smart Update Manager (SUM). Patch 10208-00 is applicable for StoreVirtual OS versions 12.6, 12.7, and 12.8. Customers on inactive versions (earlier than 12.6), must update to HPD8 using the Smart Update Manager. Using the Smart Update Manager is documented in the HPE StoreVirtual 4000 Storage HW/FW Matrix in the section, Firmware Upgrade Methods. Links to the Online Flash Components for the MO0400JFFCF drive model are: OnlineFlash Component for VMware - HPD8 OnlineFlash Component for Windows - HPD8 OnlineFlash Component for Linux - HPD8 Refer to the installation instructions in the patch release notes to apply the patch. As a best practice, Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends upgrading software during times of non-peak acitivty to minimize any potential application impact. StoreVirtual 4335 Hybrid Instructions to Determine Power-on Hours for a Drive: In the Centralized Management Console (CMC) navigation window, select your HPE StoreVirtual 4335 storage system. In the tree below it, select Diagnostics. Select the Hardware Information tab in the right pane as shown in the above screenshot. Scroll down to the drive information section. Here, the power-on hours are listed for the drives installed on the system as shown in the above screenshot. StoreVirtual 3200 Instructions to Determine Power-on Hours for a Drive: Log into the StoreVirtual system. Select Storage Systems. Select Actions in the upper-right corner. Select Download storage system support bundle: This should download a similar file as seen below. (It may take several minutes depending on the size of the file). Unzip the downloaded bundle: Unzip one of the tar files (it should not matter which one). Open the file show_drives_verbose using WordPad or similar. (Some older, pre-13.6 versions of firmware may have a slightly different name for this file.) Scroll down the list to find the total power-on hours per drive as shown below: Drive: 50000396B8180455 ------------ Drive Details ------------ UUID: 50000396B8180455 Name: Disk 50000396B8180455 Manufacturer: HP Model: MB4000JFDSN Size: 4.00 TB Part Number: Serial Number: Z590A01CFT2C1550 Firmware Version: HPD0 Location: Port: 1E Box: 1 Bay: 3 Location ID: 1E-1-3 Health Status: OK Operational Status: OK Block Size: 512 B Number of Blocks: 7814037168 RPM: 7200 Type: HDD Form Factor: 3.5" LED Indicator: Off Interconnect Type: SAS Interconnect Speed: 12 Gbits/second Sectors Read: 836302739577 Sectors Written: 27935487617 Hard Read Errors: 0 Hard Write Errors: 0 Retry Recovered Read Errors: 0 Retry Recovered Write Errors: 0 ECC Recovered Read Errors: 0 Drive Failures due to Aborted Commands: 0 Hardware Errors: 0 Smart Carrier Authentication Status: Not supported Sparing Status: None Pool: 2212a35c-0000-1000-8045-4d3430303532 Active/Passive Paths: 2 Total Paths: 2 Path 0: Status: Passive Target Reset Count: 0 Transport Errors: 0 Controller: 50014380364A9071 Expanders: 50014380379893BD Path 1: Status: Active Target Reset Count: 0 Transport Errors: 0 Controller: 50014380364A9071 Expanders: 50014380379893BF Temperature Sensor: 50000396B8180455_TEMP_1 Health Status: OK Operational Status: OK Current Temperature: 29C Upper Critical Threshold: 65C Upper Non-critical Threshold: 60C Ports: Port: 50000396B8180456 Port: 50000396B8180457 Volumes: Volume: 6EA95C220000001080464D3430303532 Volume: 6A30BD220000001080474D3430303532 Volume: 66CC20230000001080484D3430303532 Total Power On Hours: 5934 <- Power Cycle Events: 0 Rated Workload: 40.00% Max Rated TB Per Year: 550 Smart ASCQ Values: 0x32 0x43 0x16 0x14 0x42 0x10 Smart Percentage to Failure: 0% 0% 11% 0% 0% 0% Smart Worst Percentage to Failure: 0% 0% 12% 0% 0% 0% RECEIVE PROACTIVE UPDATES : Receive support alerts (such as Customer Advisories), as well as updates on drivers, software, firmware, and customer replaceable components, proactively in your e-mail through HPE Subscriber's Choice.
