HPE strongly recommends immediate application of this critical fix. Neglecting to update to SSD firmware version HPD8 will result in drive failure and data loss at 32,768 hours of operation and require restoration of data from backup in non-fault tolerance, such as RAID 0 and in fault tolerance RAID mode if more drives fail than what is supported by the fault tolerance RAID mode of the logical drive. By disregarding this notification and not performing the recommended resolution, the customer accepts the risk of incurring future-related errors. HPE was notified by a Solid State Drive (SSD) supplier of a firmware defect affecting certain SAS models listed in the Scope section. The issue affects SAS SSDs with an HPE firmware version prior to HPD8 that results in SSD failure at 32,768 hours of operation (in other words, 3 years, 270 days, 8 hours). Neither the SSD, nor the data can be recovered after the SSD failure occurs. In addition, SSDs which were put into service at the same time will likely fail nearly simultaneously. To determine total power-on hours for an HPE MSA drive, refer to the Resolution section. To determine which drive models are configured in the HPE MSA Storage array and their corresponding firmware versions, use any of the following utilities: HPE MSA Storage Health Check HPE MSA System Management Utility (SMU) HPE MSA Command Line Interface (CLI) HPE Systems Insight Manager (HPE SIM) For example: Using MSA Storage Health Check Download the MSA log file from the MSA Storage Management Utility (SMU). Upload the MSA log file to the HPE MSA Storage Health Check tool. To view information about drives and firmware versions, select the FIRMWARE INVENTORY tab. In SMU v3 To view information about disks and firmware versions, in the Home topic, select System > Update Firmware > Update Disk Drives . In SMU v2 To view information about disks and firmware versions, in the Configuration View panel, select Tools > Update Firmware . From the CLI Use the show disks encl command:
For HPE MSA arrays, this issue only affects the following four MSA SAS SSD models running a drive firmware version earlier than HPD8: HPE Model Number Model Description MO0400JFFCF HPE MSA 400GB 12G SAS MIXED USE SSD MO0800JFFCH HPE MSA 800GB 12G SAS MIXED USE SSD MO1600JFFCK HPE MSA 1.6TB 12G SAS MIXED USE SSD MO3200JFFCL HPE MSA 3.2TB 12G SAS MIXED USE SSD For other HPE products and SSD models impacted by this issue, refer to Customer Bulletin a00092491: HPE SAS Solid State Drives - Critical Firmware Upgrade Required for Certain HPE SAS Solid State Drive Models to Prevent Drive Failure at 32,768 Hours of Operation
Immediately upgrade the drive firmware to version HPD8, which HPE has released to prevent the issue described above. Obtain HPD8 for HPE MSA SSDs from one of the following links, depending on the operating system installed: MSA Windows MSA Linux NOTE : To install, refer to the Installation Instructions tab in the respective download page above. NOTE : Only the HPE MSA Windows and Linux Smart Components are available for the HPD8 drive firmware. HPE no longer releases MSA drive firmware in the .FLA format. For further details refer to Customer Notice a00094840: HPE MSA Storage - Drive Firmware .FLA (flash) Files Are Being Discontinued For a tutorial on upgrading the HPE MSA drive firmware, refer to Customer Notice a00061662: HPE MSA Storage - New HPE MSA Best Practices Part 3, Drive Firmware . Determining drive power-on hours for an HPE MSA drive Using the SMU: Select SYSTEM from the left topic menu. Hover over the drive model: Using the CLI: NOTE : It is recommended to use the API output in XML if using scripting with the CLI. The following command is used to get the details of the drive, including power-on hours: show disks <disk> detail Additional references Refer to the HPE MSA Drives - HDD/SSD Model Number Matrix for the latest drive firmware versions and firmware download links.
