Document Version Release Date Details 2 04/08/2019 Updated the Resolution with the permanent fix. 1 03/21/2019 Original Document Release. An appliance on HPE OneView 4.20.01 or HPE Synergy 4.20.01 may stop responding and fail to reboot due to a large number of tasks in its database. OneView version 4.20.01 will update its inventory of local server disk drives when informed of drive changes, including drive temperature changes. The updates will create "Background" task(s) that are not normally visible in the OneView User Interface. Environments with various workloads can cause server disk drive temperature changes; these changes can occur many times per hour per drive. If OneView receives more than 1,000 drive change events per hour, the Task Database will eventually be too full to process effectively, causing the OneView environment to stop and fail to restart. This startup failure may also happen after a normal user-initiated startup or restart request. If the appliance fails to restart, then a restore from a backup will likely fail. Determine if the appliance may be affected this issue by considering the following conditions: The environment has more than 200 drives attached to Smart Array Controllers. The servers with local drives are powered on and running workloads. HPE strongly recommends the following actions to identify whether it may be affected and to be able to proactively prevent this issue: Go to OneView User Interface, navigate to the Server Inventory page and do a keyword search on "drive" to determine the number of drives in the environment: Confirm if the appliance has an increasing number of tasks by logging into REST API. Then use the following REST API call to see the total number of Tasks in the Task Database: GET https://<appliance>/rest/tasks?count=0 Look for the total number of Tasks at the end of the JSON response. The example below shows 35,147 Task entries in the Task Database: If this number is more than 50,000, take the action described in the Resolution section below. NOTE : As a best practice, HPE strongly suggests a backup be made of the current appliances in the environment.
Any appliance running HPE OneView Version 4.20.01 or HPE Synergy Composer 4.20.01 monitoring/managing more than 200 hard drives under a HPE Smart Array may experience this issue.
