On an HPE System with HPE Integrated Lights-Out 5 (iLO 5) Firmware Version 1.30, any of the following may occur: The system may power on unexpectedly following an Operating System shutdown The system may power off unexpectedly during a system reboot. The iLO event log may report the message, "system power was cycled for update to take effect," even though no update was performed. This does not occur on all systems but can occur because iLO 5 Firmware 1.30 uses a system A/C power cycling capability for resuscitation of out-of-band communication to Broadcom 331 network adapters. The automatic power-on setting and power-on delay setting have no impact on this issue. The iLO-initiated resuscitation workaround is scheduled when iLO cannot establish out-of-band communication with the Broadcom 331 adapter and the system is powered-down (standby). The Broadcom 331 adapter is sometimes used for iLO shared network port functionality via ALOM. This adapter is also available as a stand-up HPE Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331T Adapter, part number 647594-B21. The HPE Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331FLR Adapter (629135-B22) and HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 332T Adapter (615732-B21) are not impacted. Out-of-band communication is required when using the adapter for shared network port functionality; however, this workaround is sometimes activated more frequently than necessary, and under the following conditions: Optional stand-up adapters with the same chip are present (not used for shared network port) The shared network port is not the active iLO network interface. Improvements have been made in iLO 5 firmware version 1.40 to reduce or eliminate the symptom, including the following changes to the A/C cycle workaround activation: only when shared network port is active only when communicating Broadcom 331 as LOM/ALOM, not standup adapters with the same chip only while the system is in standby - the system remains in standby following the workaround.
Any HPE Gen10 system with iLO 5 firmware version 1.30 through version 1.39 and presence of (647594-B21) HPE Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331T Adapter, or Broadcom 331 as ALOM.
Update the iLO 5 firmware to version 1.40(a) or later. Note : The iLO 5 firmware version 1.40(a) will reduce the frequency of the workaround, which may still occur.
