Under rare circumstances, HPE Gen10 server platforms (ProLiant, Synergy or Apollo)may stop responding during Power-On-Self-Test (POST) with the error message, " 282 - Invalid Server Serial number and product ID" . This issue only occurs when RBSU settings are modified immediately after resetting HPE Integrated Lights-Out 5 (iLO 5) without waiting for the iLO 5 management processor to finish reinitializing. When this issue takes place, the system serial number and product ID stored in RBSU will be reduced to zero (zero out). The system serial number and product ID will need to be reconfigured manually. The following is an example of the steps that will lead to the issue described in this advisory: 1. Reboot the server and press F9 key to start System Utilities and configure the following example settings: System Configuration iLO 5 Configuration Utility Network Options (in this example, iLO IP address is selected. Other iLO setting will have the same affect) Change the IP Address (e.g. [192.168.1.8] [192.168.1.9] or DHCP -> Statics etc.) 2. Press the F10 key to Save. 3. Question dialog: "Changes are pending. Do you want to save changes?" Select to save Changes 4. Warning dialog: "iLO configuration has changed and iLO needs to be reset". The configuration utility will not be available until next system reboot" Select Enter to Continue 5. Warning dialog "The management processor is resetting! Please wait a minute for the reset to complete. ....". While the warning message is displayed, select [OK] immediately without waiting. Then move to Step 7 immediately. 6. Continue making the following settings. System Utilities System Configuration -> BIOS / Platform Configuration (RBSU) -> Processor Option -> Intel (R) Hyper - Threading [Enabled] -> [Disabled] (Enable Hyper - Threading just an example, it can be any other setting) 7. Press the F12 key for Save and Exit. Question dialog: "Changes are pending. Do you want to save changes?" Select OK to - Save Changes" 8. Information dialog: "(File: System configuration changed. A system reboot required)". Press ENTER to reboot the system and then Select "Reboot" 9. When the system restarts, error ID "282 - Invalid Server Serial number and product ID" and possibly other errors may appear during boot and the system may stop responding.
Any HPE Gen10 server platform (ProLiant, Synergy or Apollo) running with HPE iLO 5 and only under the conditions described in the scenario presented above.
This issue has been addressed in System ROM 2.0 (or later) for HPE Gen10 server platforms (ProLiant, Synergy or Apollo). Follow the steps from the example below to obtain the latest System ROM release: 1. Click the following link: https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/home 2. Enter a product name (e.g., "BL460c Gen10") in the text search field and wait for a list of products to populate. From the products displayed, identify the desired product and click on the Drivers & software icon to the right of the product. 3. From the Drivers & software dropdown menus on the left side of the page: a. Select the Software Type - (BIOS Entitlement Required) b. Select the Software Sub Type - (System ROM) 4. Select the latest release of * RECOMMENDED * Online ROM Flash Component for HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen10 Server Version 2.0 (or later ). Note: To ensure the latest version will be downloaded, click on the Revision History tab to check if a new version of the firmware is available. 5. Click Download. The following workarounds are available if the issue is encountered before the System ROM update is performed: Shut down the server and set the system to the manufacturing default setting. Set switch S6 to ON and reboot the server. Refer to the specific product User Guide - System board components and System Maintenance Switch Descriptions for the location of system maintenance switches and switch settings for more details. OR Shut down the server and then remove the system battery to clear the system configuration. Wait a few minutes before reinstalling the battery. Refer to the specific product User Guide - System board components and Battery Replacement sections for location and additional information on removing and reinstalling the system battery. The system serial number and product ID will need to be reconfigured in RBSU. Follow these steps to reset the system serial number and product ID: Re-entering a serial number Locate the system serial number from the sticker located on the back of the chassis. From the System Utilities screen, select System Configuration > BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU) > Advanced Service Options > Serial Number Enter the serial number, and then press Enter. Save the setting. Re-entering a product ID Locate the Product ID from the sticker located on the back of the chassis. From the System Utilities screen, select System Configuration > BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU) > Advanced Service Options > Product ID. Enter the product ID, and then press Enter. Save the setting.
