Info
When using Remote Graphics Service (RGS) to connect to a bare metal Windows 7 installation on ProLiant WS460c Gen8 or ProLiant WS460c Gen9 server blades, poor performance may be observed.
For example, artifacts will be left behind on screens when dragging windows across a monitor(s):
Poor performance on the client side can include:
Delays after mouse clicks
Delays on windows moving with the mouse when dragged
Videos that stutter
This occurs because Aero is being disabled on the Windows 7 installation. The most common causes of Windows 7 disabling Aero is when there are applications that use a Mirror Driver, by having a pixel count that exceeds 8000 (UHD/4k monitors), or by not having an Aero-enabled Theme.
Scope
Any ProLiant WS460c Gen8 server blade or ProLiant WS460c Gen9 server blade/Expansion blade running AMD/NVIDIA GPUs.
Resolution
To resolve this issue, perform any of the following:
Use an Aero enabled Windows 7 theme
OR
Ensure the applications do not use a Mirror Driver
OR
Ensure that the total number of pixels (across all monitors) is less that 8000.
OR
Upgrade to Windows 10 to take advantage of the features/updates related to graphics processing.
There are no plans from the GPU vendors or Microsoft to address the limitations of Aero in Windows 7. Windows 7 is approaching end of life at Microsoft.
