On some ProLiant XL190r Gen10 and XL170r Gen10 servers (in an Apollo 2000 Chassis) and ProLiant XL450 Gen10 servers (in an Apollo 4500 Chassis) running HPE Apollo Gen10 Chassis Controller version prior to 1.3.19 may see the Smart Array (SA) Controller cache disabled due to a battery communication issue between the Smart Storage battery and the HPE Apollo Gen10 Chassis Controller. All standard tools such as Smart Array Storage Administrator (SSA), Integrated Management Log (IML),HPE Integrated Lights Out 5 (iLO5), Array Diagnostics Utility (ADU) etc. will report SA cache as disabled. When this communication error occurs, slow I/O performance may be observed and the following error messages or similar messages may be displayed: IML (Multiple entries) Slot 2 Smart Array - Cache Status: Disabled (Error Code: Missing Battery Cable) 1797-Slot 2 Drive Array - Write Back Cache Backup Previously Failed. Caching is disabled. Action: Replace the Cache Module POST (On every system boot) 1797-Slot 2 Drive Array - Write Back Cache Backup Previously Failed. Caching is disabled. Action: Replace the Cache Module ADU Report Consolidated Error Report: Controller: HPE Smart Array P408i-p SR Gen10 in slot 2 Severity: Warning Message: A cache backup failure has occurred. Please run the "Re-enable Cache Module" operation to enable the cache. Controller: HPE Smart Array P408i-p SR Gen10 in slot 2 Severity: Critical Message: The cache is permanently disabled.
Any ProLiant XL190r Gen10 or ProLiant XL170r Gen10 server in an Apollo 2000 Chassis or a ProLiant XL450 Gen10 server in an Apollo 4500 Chassis running HPE Apollo Gen10 Chassis Controller version prior to 1.3.19 and configured with an HPE Smart Array controller and HP Smart Storage Battery.
Perform the following steps in order. 1. Upgrade HPE Apollo Gen10 Chassis Controller Firmware Version to 1.3.19 (or higher). Power down the servers and remove the power cables from the HPE Apollo Gen10 Chassis. Wait 30 seconds and then re-attach the power cables. Wait 2 minutes. 3. Boot the servers in SSA from Intelligent Provisioning to re-enable the Smart Array cache. 4. Reboot the servers.
