Document Version Release Date Details 3 June 30, 2022 Updated document with additional information and a link to a technical white paper 2 August 03, 2018 Updated Resolution with permanent fix, firmware version 2.5.246 1 March 21, 2018 Original document release The IPMI watchdog timer is not supported on HPE Superdome Flex servers running with firmware prior to version 2.5.246 and a Linux operating system. Rebooting the Linux partition while the IPMI watchdog is enabled may result in only the chassis booting back to Linux. The error is more likely to occur on systems with four (or more) chassis. When the reboot error occurs, multiple hardware resources may be indicted and the event CATERR_HOLD_DETECTED will also appear in the Integrated Event Log. The following is an Event Log example: 766678 2018-03-07 07:14:38Z MFW r001i28b 0 *FATAL(7) 0000312F30555043 CATERR_HOLD_DETECTED ["CPU0/1"]
Any HPE Superdome Flex server running with firmware prior to version 2.5.246 and a Linux operating system.
This is corrected in Superdome Flex Firmware Version 2.5.246: https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/home/driverHome?sp4ts.oid=1010323142&pmrsr=0 Note: Refer to the following document for details on how to enable IPMI Watchdog on Superdome Flex systems: HPE Superdome Flex Technical White Paper If working with an older firmware version, use the following workaround: Follow the HPE Superdome FLex Server System Software installation and Configuration Guide (at https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-a00038168en_us ) and make sure the IPMI watchdog is not enabled. If the IPMI watchdog was already enabled and the reboot error occurs, perform the following: Explicitly disable IPMI watchdog timer on Linux. 1. Create a file blacklist-ipmi_watchdog.conf, in /etc/modprobe.d, with the following contents. This example uses "cat" to create the file. # cd /etc/modprobe.d # cat << EOF > blacklist-ipmi_watchdog.conf blacklist ipmi_watchdog install ipmi_watchdog /bin/true EOF 2. Regenerate the kernel module dependency depmod -a 2a. Remove the IPMI watchdog driver if it is installed grep -q ipmi_watchdog /proc/modules && rmmod ipmi_watchdog If the IPMP watchdog was enabled and the reboot error occurs, perform the following steps: Shut down Linux: shutdown -h -t now Manually acquit the indicted resources. SHOW HEALTH For each of the indicted resource, run ACQUIT PHYSLOC=<HEX STRING> where <HEX STRING> is the 64-bit hex value from 2(a).
