Revised wording to reinforce the ability of replacing failed HDDs with the higher-capacity alternate models. 3 3 November 2017 Replaced all occurrences of "3.2.2-MU4+P57" with "3.2.2-MU4+P57 (or P59+P74)" and replaced all occurrences of "P61 or P75" with "P61 or P75 or P89" 2 20 October 2017 Added information for two additional drive models throughout the document 1 11 October 2017 Original Document Release HPE 3PAR StoreServ Storage drive models that start with "HCBRE", "HCEP", and certain "SLTN" drive models listed in the table below are being discontinued. Replacements for these drives are transitioning to alternate drive models, also listed in the table below. The supply of discontinued drives is diminishing quickly and, for some models, has been depleted. To prepare for this transition, ensure that any HPE 3PAR StoreServ array with these discontinued drive models meets or exceeds the minimum OS requirements specified in Table 1 to accept the corresponding alternate replacement drive models. Once the discontinued drives are no longer available, HPE will be unable to replace the failed drive until the system is upgraded to at least the minimum OS level required for the alternate replacement drive. IMPORTANT : Not meeting the minimum OS requirements for the alternate drives below will lead to a delay in replacing a failed drive until the minimum OS requirement is met. Delays in replacing a failed drive could lead to unrecoverable read errors. The majority of systems require, at most, a patch to be installed to accept the alternate replacement drive. This is a one-time operation that is done online and will not impact the use or performance of the HPE 3PAR StoreServ array. For those systems that require more than a patch, such as an MU upgrade, it is important to take the time to plan and perform the upgrade in advance of when an alternate replacement drive is required. HPE 3PAR StoreServ 7000, 8000 and 9000 systems support the option of customers performing OS updates, along with HPE 3PAR Service Processor (SP) updates, with the exception of HPE 3PAR SP 4.x to 5.x updates. HPE urges customers to refer to the relevant update and release note documentation and to carefully review the dependencies of various host environments provided in the information library. If you are not confident in updating or applying patches, contact the Global Deployment Services (GDS) as documented below. Link to the Information Library: https://www.hpe.com/info/storage/docs/ HPE 3PAR StoreServ 10000 and 20000 systems DO NOT support the customer performing OS updates. Contact the GDS as documented below. Contacting the Global Deployment Services (GDS): Refer to the following article to request an HPE 3PAR StoreServ OS patch or update: https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-a00061484en_us See the appropriate upgrade documentation for your HPE 3PAR StoreServ system model and patch release notes for further information on patch installations. These can be located in the Storage Information Library at the following link: http://h17007.www1.hpe.com/us/en/storage/info-library/index.aspx HPE will supply its customers with higher-capacity drives for discontinued drive models where no equivalents of the same size are available (refer to Table 1). These higher-capacity drives can be used to successfully replace the lower-capacity discontinued models. For the HPE 3PAR StoreServ 7000, the higher-capacity drive is a 1-to-1 replacement. For the HPE 3PAR StoreServ 10000, the higher-capacity requires that ALL four drives in the magazine be replaced with the alternate drive model. Both the HPE 3PAR StoreServ 7000 and 10000 must have an OS or OS+patch level that supports the alternate drive model. If the alternate replacement drive model is a higher capacity model, the HPE 3PAR StoreServ 10000 requires replacing all four (4) drives in the magazine with the alternate replacement part. The HPE 3PAR StoreServ 7000 accepts the higher capacity alternate drive model as a 1-to-1 replacement for the discontinued drive. NOTE 1 : Replacing a drive with a higher capacity drive may result in a checkhealth warning such as the following: PD Cage:8 PDs FC/10K/1200GB unbalanced. Primary path: 1 on Node:2, 0 on Node:3 PD Nodes:2&3 Only 1 FC/10K/1200GB PDs are attached to these nodes; the minimum is 6 If the above is caused by the addition of one or more of the higher-capacity alternate replacement drives, these messages can be safely ignored. NOTE 2 : Software and hardware upgrade procedures frequently use the starttask admithw -ni command. Because of the checkhealth warning shown above, HPE 3PAR OS 3.2.1 may report the task's status as failed with a Volume creation may fail warning, due to the unbalanced condition. This may be disregarded, and it has been corrected in OS version 3.2.2 and higher.
This advisory applies to all HPE 3PAR StoreServ Storage 7000 and 10000 systems with one or more of the discontinued drive models installed that are listed in the table.
Ensure all HPE 3PAR StoreServ Storage 7000 and 10000 systems, with one or more of the discontinued SFF drives listed in Table 1, meet or exceed the minimum HPE 3PAR StoreServ OS requirements to accept the alternate replacement drives as specified in Table 1. NOTE : Additional patches may be required if drive models starting with "STHB" are also installed on your system.
