Original Document Release.
When issuing an lvremove or vgremove command from Canonical Ubuntu Logical Volume Manager (LVM) to a logical volume/volume group that is stored on an HPE Solid State Drive (SSD), an HPE ProLiant Gen9-series server may reboot after the HPE Smart Array controller stops responding.
The unresponsiveness occurs because Canonical Ubuntu sends a SCSI Write SAME command to a sector count that is not supported by the controller firmware. The controller returns a check condition and Canonical Ubuntu continues to send the same command, resulting in an error handling loop.
Scope
Any HPE ProLiant Gen9-series server running Canonical Ubuntu with any HPE Smart Array controller listed in the Platforms Affected section below.
Resolution
To avoid the HPE ProLiant Gen9-series server running Canonical Ubuntu from rebooting, perform the following:
Prevent Canonical Ubuntu from sending repeated SCSI WRITE SAME commands by performing the following:
Edit the /etc/lvm/lvm.conf file.
Change issue discards from 1 to 0
issue_discards=0
Save and reboot.
This is targeted to be resolved in a future version of the HPE Smart Array controller firmware. This advisory will be updated when additional information is available.
