Original document release
On an HPE Edgeline EL1000 or EL4000 Converged Edge System configured with a ProLiant m710x or ProLiant m510 server cartridge, when an attempt is made to send a magic packet to the PCIe NIC option card to execute Wake-on-LAN (WOL), the CPU will not power on.
Wake-on-LAN (WoL) allows a computer to be turned on or awakened by a network message. The message is usually sent to the target computer by a program executed on a device connected to the same local area network. Wake-on-LAN (WOL) is implemented using a specially designed packet called a magic packet, which is sent to all computers in a network, among them the computer to be awakened.
Scope
Any HPE EL1000 or HPE EL4000 Converged Infrastructure with any PCIe NIC option card that supports WOL.
Resolution
WOL support has been added in Chassis Controller 4.25 deliverables and the EL4000 and EL1000 v2 PCIe variants of the chassis, part numbers:
880273-B21: HPE EL1000 v2 10G 2xSFP+PThru Sys
880271-B21: HPE EL1000 v2 1G 2xRJ45 PThru Sys
879808-B21: HPE EL4000 v2 10G 2xSFP+ Switch Sys
879799-B21: HPE EL4000 v2 4x10G 2xQSFP+ PThru Sys
As a workaround, use the WOL through the embedded NIC on the cartridge, to power on the CPU:
Navigate to F9 - System Utilities
System Configuration
BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU)
Obtain the ProLiant m710x Cartridge NIC port MAC Address that is intended for WOL from the RBSU
Select NIC Configuration
Select WOL "enabled."
Power off the server cartridge
Connect a Linux server to the same network segment with the m710x cartridge and execute the ether-wake cartridge-MAC-Address
