Document Version Release Date Details 2 11/08/2017 Resolution updated 1 06/21/2017 Original Document Release. An HPE ProLiant server configured with one or more of the Converged Network Adapters (CNA) listed in the Scope section below and configured for iSCSI hardware initiator, may experience TCP packet re-transmissions from the iSCSI storage device due to a missing acknowledgement packet from the affected host. This will cause an acknowledgement packet to fail to be sent until after a timeout occurs and the storage retransmits the previous packet in the transaction. IMPORTANT NOTE: This issue ONLY occurs when the affected Host/server is idle and Delayed Acknowledgements (delayed ack) are present in the network communication. The missing acknowledgement issue may cause a network resource utilization/performance issue on an iSCSI storage device as the number of affected units (idle hosts that connect to the iSCSI storage device) are increased. This is a result of the sending unit (the iSCSI storage device) maintaining/storing in memory the previous data sent to the host until the host has acknowledged receipt of the data. When no acknowledgement is sent by the host, the storage device must wait a period of time before re-transmitting the same data to the host.
Any HPE ProLiant server configured with any of the following Converged Network Adapters running firmware version 11.1.183.62 (or earlier) and configured for iSCSI Hardware Initiator: HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 556FLR-SFP+ Adapter HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 556FLR-T Adapter HPE FlexFabric 20Gb 2-port 650FLB Adapter HPE FlexFabric 20Gb 2-port 650FLB Adapter for ConvergedSystem 900 HPE FlexFabric 20Gb 2-port 650M Adapter HPE StoreFabric CN1200E 10Gb Converged Network Adapter HPE StoreFabric CN1200E 10GBASE-T Dual Port Converged Network Adapter
A fix has been implemented in CNA Firmware version 11.2.1263.19 for the iSCSI Hardware Initiator Experiencing TCP Re-Transmissions From the Storage Due to a Missing Acknowledgement Packet From the Host. Obtain CNA firmware 11.2.1263.19 from the links below: HPE Firmware Flash for Emulex Converged Network Adapters - Windows (x64): https://www.hpe.com/global/swpublishing/MTX-feec5155255745c6ab62e6aa76 HPE Firmware Flash for Emulex Converged Network Adapters - Linux (x64): https://www.hpe.com/global/swpublishing/MTX-f09ed7a6e0eb4784a842f4c9cd HPE Firmware Flash for Emulex Converged Network Adapters for VMware vSphere 6.0: https://www.hpe.com/global/swpublishing/MTX-638fde5f9a424fcbac98b53f75 HPE Firmware Flash for Emulex Converged Network Adapters for VMware vSphere 6.5: https://www.hpe.com/global/swpublishing/MTX-ed477c732b8a408abaf67358f4 Alternativily, a workaround for this issue is available with the firmware version 11.2.1226.20. When the firmware of the CNA is updated to 11.2.1226.20, the option to Disable delayed ACK in the CNA BIOS for the iSCSI port is present. By disabling the delayed ACK feature, the default behavior of the CNA will be changed to respond to all incoming packets without delay and avoid the identified issue in the firmware. Note: All versions of CNA firmware for the affected adapters prior to, and including, 11.1.183.62, do not provide the option in the CNA BIOS to enable or disable the Delayed ACK feature. By design, Delayed ACK is enabled, set for 200ms, and cannot be changed or disabled in these previous versions of firmware.
