On certain HPE ProLiant Gen9 servers, the system fans may spin at a high speed up to 24 hours, causing noticeably increased fan noise. This occurs when the drives are configured with any RAID mode using Px4x or Hx4x Smart Array controllers. When this occurs, the HP Active Health System (AHS) or HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) logs may indicate that the fans are running at high speeds (for example, above 70% duty) and that this behavior is driven by the HD-Max sensor, but the AHS may not indicate the HDD over-temperature or any temperature warning, although the driving sensor is HD Max (The sensor numbering of the HD Max may vary among platforms.) This only occurs if the Smart Array Controllers are running a firmware version prior to 5.04. This problem can be reproduced when running high IO load user applications or Hard Drive specific stress tests.
