IMPORTANT : The Smart Array Upgrade provided in the Resolution is recommended to prevent cache disablement from occurring. HPE recommends performing this upgrade at the customer's earliest possible convenience. Neglecting to perform the recommended action and not performing the recommended resolution could result in the potential for subsequent errors to occur. On an HPE ProLiant server configured with a Smart Array P440 or Smart Array P840 Controller with write cache enabled and using 4 GB cache modules, the cache may be disabled if a power outage is experienced while the system is writing to the disk. When power is removed while the system is writing to disk, the data is backed up to NANDFlash on the cache module. When power is restored, the restore of data in NANDFlash to cache fails. When this issue first occurs, the following message is logged in the Integrated Management Log (IML): Option ROM POST Error: 1793-Slot 1 Drive Array - Data in Write-Back Cache has been Lost. Option ROM POST Error: Action: Verify the integrity of the data on the drive. Backup and restore data if necessary. Perform orderly shutdowns to avoid leaving data in the cache. IMPORTANT: This issue does NOT occur when the operating system shuts down gracefully. In addition, an occurrence of the issue is extremely rare if the server experiences a sudden loss of power or a power outage. After the initial failure, the following IML event will be displayed after booting: Option ROM POST Error: - Write-Back Cache Restore Previously Failed. Caching is disabled. Action: Replace the Cache Module Once this occurs, the controller will still function but the cache is disabled, causing a performance I/O issue on the Smart Array controller. Note: An unexpected power outage includes loss of all AC power or a direct command to iLO to power-cycle or a press and hold of the power button. This also includes sending a power-cycle command to the iLO GUI while the system is writing data to the disk.
Any HPE ProLiant Server configured with a Smart Array P440 or Smart Array P840 Controller with write cache enabled and using 4 GB cache modules. Note: 2 GB cache modules are not impacted.
To prevent this issue from occurring, update the Smart Array Firmware to version 4.60. Depending on the operating system installed, click the link below to download and install the firmware for the Smart Array P440 and Smart Array P840 Controllers: Windows: https://downloads.hpe.com/pub/softlib2/software1/sc-windows-fw-array/p1604317020/v125459/cp031587.exe Linux: https://downloads.hpe.com/pub/softlib2/software1/sc-linux-fw-array/p773315150/v125461/rpm/RPMS/x86_64/hp-firmware-smartarray-ea3138d8e8-4.60-1.1.x86_64.rpm Vmware: https://downloads.hpe.com/pub/softlib2/software1/sc-linux-fw-array/p1727101721/v125460/CP031588.zip If this cache disablement issue has already occurred, the controller must be replaced. The controller includes the cache module, since both the controller and the module must be treated as one part, even when it may be possible to replace only the cache module. If assistance is needed replacing the controller, contact HPE support: Click on the following URL to locate the HPE Customer Support phone number in your country: https://h20195.www2.hpe.com/v2/Getdocument.aspx?docname=A00039121ENW . Note: Firmware version 4.60 is a fix specifically built to resolve this issue. This fix will also be included in the the next general release of the Smart Array firmware.
