Symptoms

Previous hard or abrupt shutdown of the system, followed by later Unity OE upgrade svc_esrs_ve -s-->Output shows as 503 Unknown. Unisphere Alert: ESRS cannot be re-enabled automatically. Unisphere > Service > EMC Secure Remote Services > Status: unknown

Cause

While a complete Root Cause is not yet known, a non-graceful array shutdown can leave residual data in the system. If Unity OE is upgraded afterward, this residual data may remain in the Integrated Secure Remote Services eVE container. The dirty data can prevent the Secure Remote Services VE service from starting cleanly.

Resolution

On Unity OE 4.1 or later, Secure Remote Services VE (Integrated) may show an "unknown" status after upgrade. If it was working before the upgrade and shows symptoms similar to those outlined here, run the two CLI commands to restart and reenable the service. If this fails to correct the issue, contact your Service Provider: svc_esrs_ve --restartsvc_esrs_ve --reenablesvc_esrs_ve --status
