When a customer installs Windows 2025 on a SATA software RAID while the system is configured with NVMe drives, the OS installation completes successfully. However, after the system reboots, it stops responding at the BIOS POST screen, as shown in Figure [1]. This issue occurs only under the specific configuration listed below: Windows 2025SATA RAID software (RAID 1 or RAID 5)NVMe drive configuration where not all drives are Samsung brandOS is installed on SATA software RAID Figure [1] - BIOS POST error during the first reboot The issue does not occur when Windows 2025 is installed on a BOSS card instead of using software RAID on SATA drives. However, the T160 does not support a BOSS configuration when NVMe drives are installed.Example If the customer builds the SATA software RAID first and then installs Windows 2025 on the software RAID, the system operates as expected even after the NVMe drives are connected later. This scenario is not affected because the boot loader does not reside on the NVMe drives. On the R260, this issue does not impact the system if the customer installs Windows 2025 on a BOSS card.
This issue is the result of the Windows 2025 software RAID driver, which fails to create the required system partitions. As a result, the Windows boot loader cannot be installed on the target partition, leading to a reboot failure.
Do NOT replace any hardware for this issue as it is not hardware‑related. The Dell Software RAID team is aware of the issue and is working on a fix. The target timeline is the end of Q1. Updates to this article are forthcoming when more specific information becomes available.Current workaround: For T160 and R260, remove the NVMe drives before installing Windows 2025. After installation is successfully completed, reinsert the NVMe drives back into the system. For R260, Install Windows 2025 on a BOSS card; in this configuration, the software RAID can be built successfully, either during the installation phase or afterward.
