Observed behavior during Online Capacity Expansion (OCE) Expanding a virtual disk using the PERC Hardware Integration Interface (Hii) or iDRAC UI operation may fail with a drive count exceeded error even though the total number of physical disks does not exceed the controller’s limit. The failure depends on the number of drives already in the virtual disk and the number of drives being added. Example scenario: Original 12‑disk RAID 6 Attempt to add 12 disks to reach a 24‑disk RAID 6 - the task fails with a drive count exceeded error. Adding only eight disks succeeds, resulting in a 20‑disk RAID 6. A subsequent attempt to add the remaining four disks to reach 24 disks also fails (adding 1 - 4 disks fails). The iDRAC UI may report the job status as Failed with an error code PR21 . PERC H965i and H965e are impacted. Example of the maximum allowed physical disk count: An error message was observed in Hii even though fewer than 20 disks were selected:
PERC H965 Hii Logic Issue During Online Capacity Expansion Underlying Problem: The Hii logic in PERC H965 controllers miscalculates the total number of physical disks during an OCE operation. This miscalculation triggers a false drive count exceeded error, even when the disk count remains within the controller’s limits.
Apply Firmware Update to Resolve Drive Count Exceeded Error. Recommended Fix - Firmware Update Install the PERC H965 firmware version that contains the fix for the drive count exceeded condition, firmware version 8.16.x.x. This update is scheduled for release May 2026 . Workaround: Perform OCE with PERCCLI2 Utility. If the firmware update is not yet available, you can complete the OCE using the PERCCLI2 utility. Log in to the operating system hosting the PERC H965 controller. Launch the PERCCLI2 command‑line interface. Select the target controller (for example, controller 0). I nitiate the OCE operation , specifying the existing virtual disk and the additional physical disks to be added. Monitor the job status until it reports completion. Example of the PERCCLI2 Expand task, adding drives 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23 to the Virtual Disk V1. perccli2 /c0 show virtual disk >> v1 EID >> 300 disks online >> 18 (0-17) disks Ugood >> 6 (18-23) perccli2 /c0 /v1 expand drives=300:18,19,20,21,22,23 operation successful
