The PowerProtect Data Manager appliance is used to protect the vSphere environment. The Virtual Machine (VM) templates are not listed in the exclusion Protection Policy Asset view for selection to remove the " Unprotected " status. The ' Add to Policy ' action is not available for the VM templates in the "Infrastructure > Assets > Virtual Machines" view. The PowerProtect Dashboard shows virtual machine assets as unprotected.
This is by design and expected behavior. PowerProtect Data Manager does not support direct protection of VMware VM templates due to limitations in the VMware Application Programming Interface (API). The capability to add a template type VM Asset to a VMware protection Policy is restricted. This is similar functionality for other types of virtual machines in the inventory (Ex: PowerProtect Appliance, Report Nodes, Search Engines, VM Direct Engines, Data Domain Virtual Edition (DDVE), and others) Note: This type of vCenter Asset Source does not count against the unprotected count in the PowerProtect Dashboard.
If the PowerProtect Dashboard shows unprotected assets, there are VMs in the inventory that are not being protected or are part of the PowerProtect exclusion list. Evaluate the environment to ensure that all other virtual machines are added to the appropriate VMware Protection Policy.
