An expander backplane firmware update requires the primary SAS RAID/HBA controller to be enabled. If the controller is disabled using the disable internal raid controller option or the PCI-e slot is disabled at the BIOS level. In that case, the backplane firmware update job is expected to fail. JCP042 Job JID_XXXXXXXXXXX failed because Job failed. SUP0517 Unable to update the 14G Expander Backplane firmware to version 2.52 because the operation is not supported or the device is in a locked state or the device is not present in the target system. SUP0516 Updating firmware for 14G Expander Backplane to version 2.52.
The expander backplane firmware update payload cannot be delivered if the SAS controller is disabled.
The SAS controller must be reenabled to allow the expander Backplane firmware to update successfully. Once the update has been applied, the controller can be returned to its previous disabled state.
