Cat9300 stack, running IOS version with SMU file installed, shows version mismatch when upgrading if the SMU were deleted from the flash. Members go down showing error: Mar 17 17:20:53.100: %BOOT-3-BOOTTIME_SMU_MISSING_DETECTED: R0/0: install_engine: SMU file /flash/cat9k_iosxe.17.03.03.CSCvw65439.SPA.smu.bin missing and system impact will be unknown On the members that stay up , the error below is shown: *Mar 17 16:59:14.513: %BOOT-5-BOOTTIME_SMU_RUN_MISMATCH_DETECTED: Switch 1 R0/0: issu_stack: Running SMU mismatch from active dectected. System will try to correct it, switch 2 will be reloaded *Mar 17 17:00:23.876: %BOOT-5-BOOTTIME_RB_SYNC_FAILED: Switch 1 R0/0: issu_stack: Failed to sync the SMUs to switch 2. Install rollback operation may get affected.
- An SMU file was installed on the previous or current version. - The issue is triggered if the SMU file is deleted from the flash on one or more members and an upgrade to a new version is performed.
Deleting the .PATCH and .PATCH-backup files from the flash on all members and reloading the stack allows the stack to be restored.
This behavior is not a bug but expected. Customers cannot delete an SMU from any member—active or standby—using rm, delete, or similar commands. If a customer does so, the device enters a bad state, resulting in the errors described above. The device will show these errors, and the customer can fix the issue by following the workaround.
