The Certificate Revocation List (CRL) cache updates hourly and if you log in to vCenter by using a smart card during such an hourly cycle in which the old CRL is expired but no new CRL is downloaded, the login fails. Since this is a corner case, smart card authentication on vCenter intermittently fails and in the vSphere Client, you see the error Unable to validate submitted credentials .
