Symptoms
Using VMware Tools 11.0.x on Horizon VMs can be causing performance issues when AppInfo is enabled.
Cause
In VMware Tools 11.0.x and later versions, AppInfo is enabled by default.The AppInfo collects information about running applications inside the guest. There are CPU performance penalties when AppInfo is turned on for VMware Tools 11.0.x version until version 11.0.6 (the AppInfo plugins bundled with these VMware Tools versions captures information about the running apps every 30 minutes by default and hence may cause performance impact).This should not be a concern for VMware Tools 11.1.0 onwards as the polling interval for AppInfo is 6 hours instead of 30 mins.
Resolution
To resolve this issue, disable the AppInfo to avoid performance downside. To disable AppInfo in the golden image please refer to the following documentation: Using the VMware Tools Configuration File at VM LevelPlease refer to the appropriate command for your o/s version.
Attention: In some cases even after running the the following command, appInfo continues to run:# vmware-toolbox-cmd config set appInfo disabled trueThis can happen with certain VMware Tools versions in some guest operating systems. In Vmware Tools 11.x and 12.x there are 2 parameters, one for "appinfo" with a small i and one for "appInfo" with a capital I. To work around the issue, you can set both of the options to "true":# vmware-toolbox-cmd config set appinfo disabled true# vmware-toolbox-cmd config set appInfo disabled true
Note:If you are using the OS Optimization Tool, AppInfo will be automatically disabled.The plugin status will be as follows post VM Tools upgrade :If the plugin status is disabled manually or through OSOT, status is preserved post VM Tools upgrade from VM Tools 11.x to higher version.If VM Tools is upgraded from 10.x to any higher version, it needs to be explicitly disabled after upgrade.
