You see below symptoms in Vista SP2, Microsoft VC 2017 redistributable package and Microsoft Document Explorer 2008, VMware Tools 10.3.0 which depends on the Microsoft VC 2017 redistributable package. When starting a VMware Tools installation by running the setup command, a dialog box appears which has a progress bar. This dialog box with progress bar does not complete and launches the general tools install dialog box.Installation hangs with the message: Preparing 'VMware Tools' for installation...The VMware Tools package does not get installed.In the user’s temporary folder %temp%\vminst.log and %temp%\vmmsi.log,you see VMware tools install logs.
This issue occurs when VC 2017 redistributable package install by the VMware Tools does not complete due to the prior installation of the Microsoft Document Explorer 2008 package.
To install VMware Tools: Uninstall Microsoft Document Explorer 2008 package from the Vista SP2 system.Once uninstalled, install or upgrade the VMware Tools by running setup again.
