When configuring the syslog on VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 to use custom port for syslog in the vSphere Web Client completes, you experience these symptoms: In the /var/log/vmware/syslog/wrapper.log file, you see entries similar to:INFO|jvm 1|<YYYY-MM-DD>T<time>|WrapperManager: Initializing...INFO|jvm 1|<YYYY-MM-DD>T<time>|Ping failed. host: host_ip, port: 514 - java.net.ConnectException: Connection refusedINFO | jvm 1 | <YYYY-MM-DD>T<time> | Ping failed. host: host_ip, port: 514 - java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused</time></time></time>Note: The preceding log excerpts are only examples. Date, time, and environmental variables may vary depending on your environment. This issue occurs because the /etc/vmware-syslog/vmware-syslog-health.properties file is not automatically updated after the syslog settings are modified through the vSphere Client.
To work around this issue, manually update the /etc/vmware-syslog/vmware-syslog-health.properties file. To manually update the /etc/vmware-syslog/vmware-syslog-health.properties file: Open the console for the vCenter Server Appliance and log in using root credentials. Type shell.set --enabled = True and press Enter. Type shell and press Enter. Navigate to the /etc/vmware-syslog/ folder by running this command:cd /etc/vmware-syslog/ Create a backup of the vmware-syslog-health.properties file by running this command:cp vmware-syslog-health.properties vmware-syslog-health.properties.bck Open the vmware-syslog-health.properties file using a text editor by running this command:vi vmware-syslog-health.properties Search for the cls.strata.ping.port= entry and update the port.For example:cls.strata.ping.port=515 Save and close the file. Reboot the vCenter Server Appliance.
