Horizon can be used to create three different types of clones: Full Clones, Linked Clones, and Instant Clones. Customization of each clone type requires different methods: Full Clone desktops can be customized using Microsoft SysprepLinked Clone desktops can be customized using either Microsoft Sysprep or VMware QuickPrepInstant Clone desktops can be customized using either Microsoft Sysprep or VMware ClonePrep This article discusses the main differences between VMware ClonePrep, QuickPrep and Microsoft Sysprep for the various clone types, allowing users to select the appropriate method. In terms of a appropriate pool type for a given use case, This is a design decision, please reference: https://techzone.vmware.com/resource/horizon for additional resources. For limits on pool size by type from Horizon 8 onwards, see VMware Configuration Maximums Note: In Horizon 8, Linked Clones are no longer available and have been replaced with Instant Clones.
Here's an overview of each customization method: QuickPrep is a VMware customization process run during a linked clone desktop deployment to personalize each desktop clone created from the parent image. QuickPrep is only available for linked clonesClonePrep is a VMware Customer process run during an instant clone desktop deployment to personalize each desktop clone created from the parent image. ClonePrep is only available for instant clonesMicrosoft Sysprep is a tool to deploy the configured operation system installation from a base image. The desktop can then be customized based on an answer script. Sysprep can be used for all types of clones - linked clones, instant clones, and full clones Sysprep can modify a larger number of configurable parameters than QuickPrep or ClonePrep, but QuickPrep and ClonePrep are faster During the initial startup of each desktop, ClonePrep and QuickPrep: Creates a new computer account in Active Directory for each desktop.Gives the instant-clone or linked-clone desktop a new name.Joins the desktop to the appropriate domain. For linked-clone desktop, QuickPrep optionally mounts a new volume that contains the user profile information.
