Over time, on the HPE Alletra Storage MP B10000, repeated deletions and/or data migrations can leave free space stranded in individual Allocation Groups within a Common Provisioning Group (CPG). This free space is not available for use by Virtual Volumes in other Allocation Groups. If the system capacity usage reaches a point where no globally-free space is available, Virtual Volumes in Allocation Groups without free space may be unable to allocate space and therefore experience write failures.
HPE Alletra Storage MP B10000 running HPE Alletra Storage ArcusOS versions prior to 10.5.50 is affected by this issue.
For HPE Alletra Storage MP B10000 running HPE Alletra Storage ArcusOS version 10.5.50 (or later), the array automatically runscompactcpgif there is sufficient stranded space. For HPE Alletra Storage ArcusOS versions prior to 10.5.50, the steps provided in the Resolution section should be performed periodically if the array is over 90% raw capacity usage.NOTE: Update your systems when HPE Alletra Storage ArcusOS 10.5.55 for HPE Alletra Storage MP B10000 is available.IMPORTANT: Raw capacity usage should always be obtained from the CLIshowsys -spacecommand. DO NOT rely on the Data Services Cloud Console or on-array UI dashboard “used space” display, since these treat the free space in Allocation Groups as “free” (not “used”) and can therefore be misleading when there is a significant amount of system capacity in this state.Evaluate the CPGs for reclaimable space.Use the CLI command, compactcpg -dr(compactcpg in dryrun mode) to determine how much space can be reclaimed from each CPG.Once determined, use the CLI command, compactcpg <cpgname>, on each of the identified CPGs.Optionally, this task can be made as a part of the system's schedule and the CLI command, compactcpg <cpgname>, will run periodically.Use the CLI command, showsched -all, to check for the current system schedules in place.Use the CLI command, createsched [options] <cmd> <task-schedule> <sched-name>, to schedule a task for compactcpg as shown in the example below. The example schedule below runs every Sunday at 2:00 a.m.:createsched "compactcpg -f SSD_r6" "0 2 * * 0" weekly-compactcpgThe task schedule has five fixed fields.FieldAllowed ValuesMinute0 - 59Hour* OR 0 - 59Day of the month* OR 1 - 31Month* OR 1 - 12Day of the week* OR 0 - 6 (Sunday to Saturday)
