On HPE Synergy Gen12 systems with VMware vSphere ESXi 9.0, HPE OneView may cause a forced update of an HPE Custom ESXi 9.0 OS Image, but the firmware and OS driver updates may fail. This can occur if Smart Update Tools do not communicate the update before the 120-minute timeout for OneView.When this occurs, the HPE OneView User Interface (UI) may appear as follows:In addition, HPE OneView will report that the Smart Update Tool (SUT) is not responding and will recommend a retry:"The firmware update operation failed. The firmware installation has failed. Smart Update Tools are not responding.The firmware update operation has been marked as InstallFail because OneView did not get an update from Smart Update Tools within the timeout period of 120 minutes. (SHFW_004)"
HPE Synergy 480 Gen12 systems with the HPE Custom ESXi 9.0 OS Image to be installed in a Synergy environment.
The update issue may be resolved by following the recommended instructions in the Resolution message on HPE OneView UI. Perform it in the Smart Update Tools Command Line Interface (CLI):Run the 'sut /status' command using the Smart Update Tools command line interface and verify if the firmware and drivers update has completed successfully. It is possible that the installation would have completed but the Smart Update Tools was unable to report the status back to OneView.If the firmware has installed successfully and a reboot is needed, perform a server power-cycle. Re-apply the profile and Smart Update Tools will mark the status as "Activated."If Smart Update Tools is not responding or is responding back with an "InstallFailed" state, contact an authorized support representative and provide them with a OneView support dump and the Smart Update Tools logs by running the gatherlogs command on the OS.If the previous instructions do not resolve the situation, as a workaround, make the update a two-step process:Perform the firmware update only.Update with the OS drivers and value-added software last.
