A "Staging Phase" with an HPE Synergy compute module refers to the process of uploading and preparing firmware and driver updates on a device while it remains online and active. This process is managed through HPE OneView, the software-defined management interface for Synergy, and minimizes server downtime by separating the update process into two steps: staging and activation.HPE OneView will use HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) on each compute module to copy the necessary firmware and driver files to a temporary staging directory. During the staging phase, HPE OneView will apply the settings defined in the server profile to the compute module by communicating with the iLO processor. However, an issue may occur where the HPE OneView updates stall at the staging phase and the iLO User Interface (UI) will display:"502 error or 504 error"When this issue occurs, the firmware update on the OneView profile will not proceed further and will fail after OneView's timeout period. The profile will report unable to discover server hardware. In addition, the iLO web interface access will be lost due to the 502 error or 504 error. This issue can be caused if the back end or hardware API takes more time and responses are delayed. This issue may occur with HPE Synergy Service Pack (SSP) 2025.10.01 and HPE OneView 10.10 or 10.20.
HPE Synergy 480 Gen12 Compute Modules with HPE Integrated Lights-Out 7 (iLO 7) that are updated with HPE Synergy Service Pack (SSP) 2025.10.01 when managed by HPE OneView 10.10 or 10.20.
To resolve this issue, perform the following steps:Wait for the HPE OneView timeout to be completed (a time period of approximately one and half hours).Perform a server refresh from the Server Hardware page in OneView to clear the discovery error and re-apply the profile.Typically, the iLO web interface will recover automatically after a few minutes (about 300 seconds) through its built-in recovery mechanism.
