On supported HPE Gen10 Plus or Gen11 servers with S4510/S4610 SATA SSD drives connected to HPE Smart Array SR controllers, a drive firmware upgrade will not complete in Offline mode and Legacy SUM mode on Windows and Linux unless a force option is implemented. This advisory details steps to ensure a force option is required to upgrade the drive firmware.
This advisory applies to S4510/S4610 SATA SSD drives listed below, connected to HPE Smart Array SR controllers on supported HPE Gen10 Plus or Gen11 servers.ControllersHPE SR416i-a x16 Lanes 4GB Cache NVMe/SAS 24G Controller for HPE Gen10 PlusHPE SR932i-p x32 Lanes 8GB Wide Cache NVMe/SAS 24G Controller for HPE Gen10 PlusHPE SR416ie-m Gen11 x16 Lanes 4GB Cache SPDM Mezzanine Storage controllerHPE SR932i-p Gen11 x32 Lanes 8GB Wide Cache PCI SPDM Plug-in Storage controllerHPE SR416i-o Gen11 x16 Lanes 8GB Cache OCP SPDM Storage ControllerHPE SR308i-o Gen11 x8 Lanes 2GB Cache OCP Storage ControllerHPE SR308i-p Gen11 x8 Lanes 2GB Cache PCI Plug-in Storage ControllerDrivesHPE Model NumberHPE Part NumberDescriptionVK000240GWTSVP05924-B21HPE 240GB SATA RI SFF SC DS SSDVK000480GWTTAP05928-B21HPE 480GB SATA RI SFF SC DS SSDVK000960GWTTBP05932-B21HPE 960GB SATA RI SFF SC DS SSDVK001920GWTTCP05938-B21HPE 1.92TB SATA RI SFF SC DS SSDVK003840GWTTDP05946-B21HPE 3.84TB SATA RI SFF SC DS SSDMK000480GWTTHP05976-B21HPE 480GB SATA MU SFF SC DS SSDMK000960GWTTKP05980-B21HPE 960GB SATA MU SFF SC DS SSDMK001920GWTTLP05986-B21HPE 1.92TB SATA MU SFF SC DS SSDMK003840GWTTNP05994-B21HPE 3.84TB SATA MU SFF SC DS SSD
This issue is resolved in HPE Service Pack for ProLiant version 2024.04.00.00 and later, which supports firmware upgrade flashing without a forced option on S4510/S4610 SATA SSD drives:HPE Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) Home PageNOTE: The drive firmware upgrade is supported with force option only when S4510/S4610 SATA SSD drives are configured with HPE SR controllers on HPE Gen10 Plus or Gen11 servers.Follow these steps to ensure a force option is required to upgrade drive firmware on a supported HPE Gen10 Plus or Gen11 sever with S4510/S4610 SATA SSD drives connected to an HPE Smart Array SR controller:Install Windows OS on the target via Smart Update Tools (SUT). Ensure that the drive firmware version that you are going to flash the upgrade on is an earlier version.Baseline the server with SEP MSB 23 SPP (for example, RC Build#19)Test the firmware upgrade with drive smart component of current SPP by mounting the Gen11PR4 SPP (ex: Build#25) ISO onto the iLO IRC console.Navigate to the mounted SPP path in the OS. Go toPackagesand double-clickclean-cache(the windows batch file).Navigate one step back to the primary folder and double-click thelaunch-sumfile. The SUM page will open in the browser window.SelectLocal Host Guided Update (LGU)and select theassign different baselinecheckbox. Browse the launched SPP path, add it, and clickOK.After the inventory completion, select the S4510/S4610 SATA SSD drive component for deployment. In the following example, SC isnotselected:The following screenshot shows the attempt to upgrade from firmware HPG6 to HPG7:This requires selectingforce optionthough it is upgrade flashing:As a workaround, the drive firmware can be upgraded by using a force option during the SPP flash.ORBy using a standalone method to flash the smart component in Windows:Place the smart component in a temporary directory.Double-click on the smart component.Follow the directions given by the smart component.Revision HistoryDocument VersionRelease DateDetails2October 9, 2025Moved the second to last sentence of the Resolution section to the top of the section, added "version 2024.04.00.00 or later" to that sentence, added the link to the SPP page, and removed "OS" from the end of the Title, so the word "(Revision)" would fit at the beginning1September 28, 2023Original Document Release
