In specific PowerEdge R650 configurations, the system fans typically run at a low speed of approximately 10% Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) However, the fans exhibit periodic spikes, during which they ramp up to operate at full speed, 100% PWM, for several minutes every hour. Figure 1: iDRAC Cooling Overview
For certain PowerEdge R650 configurations, when no components are demanding high fan speeds due to low or no active workload, the minimum fan speed is around 10%. This is not sufficient to keep the Power Supply Unit (PSU) inlet temperature below a certain threshold.
Fix: The issue is addressed in iDRAC firmware version 7.10.50.00, which is available from Dell Support. PowerEdge: Recommended BIOS and iDRAC9 Updated for 15th Generation Servers Workaround: Set the " fan speed offset " from OFF to LOW using the following command: Racadm set system.thermalsettings.FanSpeedOffset 0 Alternatively, set the " Minimum Fan Speed in PWM (% of Max)" from the default value to a custom value of 20% using this command: Racadm set system.thermalsettings.MinimumFanSpeed 20
