Clients cannot connect to SMB servers running on PowerStore, PowerFlex, or PowerMax. Windows users see the following error when connecting to a CIFS share on a certain NAS server on the array: "The network BIOS session limit was exceeded."
Due to the NT session limit being exceeded, clients cannot open new SMB sessions on an impacted NAS server. The hard coded maximum is 128,000. This happens when clients routinely create SMB sessions but do not close them. The session count slowly builds up until it reaches a count of 128,000 open SMB sessions. At which point clients start having issues accessing the NAS server.
Modify the LanmanServer.IdleUserAutoLogoff parameter for the impacted NAS server. This removes inactive sessions and resolves the issue. For PowerStore, the following commands can be used to manage the parameter values and view open sessions: svc_nas_tools --server <nas server name> --args="-param -facility cifs -info LanmanServer.IdleUserAutoLogoff" svc_nas_tools --server <nas server name> --args="-param -facility cifs -modify LanmanServer.IdleUserAutoLogoff -value <allowed idle time in minutes>" svc_nas_cifssupport --server <nas server name> --args "-audit -full " svc_nas_cifssupport --server <nas server name> --args "-audit -full " | grep "total number" For other platforms, the customer may engage Dell support to have the system examined. Note: there is an existing issue in svc_nas_cifssupport documented as SDNAS-26622. When printing "-audit -full", the binary truncates any output larger than 64k. If a larger output is needed, engage support. This issue is fixed in an upcoming software release, no details of which can be provided yet.
