Details: Dell Enterprise SSD models listed, with firmware prior to D417, have a firmware issue that results in drive failure at 40,000 power-on hours. A failed drive due to this firmware issue results in the drive reporting 0 GB of available storage. The drive will go offline and become unusable after a power cycle in a format corruption state (drive reports 03/31/00). Example:
Resolution Upgrade the drive firmware to version D417 (or newer). Upgrading the drive firmware to version D417 (or newer) prior to 40,000 power-on hours should address this issue. Go to the Drivers & Downloads site for updates on the applicable products. Note, the following list of impacted products updates are linked. For PowerEdge servers, Dell Storage MD1400 and MD1420, Dell Storage NX3230 and DSS7500 Download D417 firmware.Upgrade the firmware with the Dell Update package, to learn more go to Dell Updating Firmware using Dell Update Packages (DUPs). Alternately, the firmware upgrade can also be applied through iDRAC, Repository Manager, or OpenManage Enterprise. Ensure that the following conditions do not exist for the drives: Any Virtual Disk that is not optimal.A RAID container that is performing a Background Initialization or Consistency Check.A Rebuild, Resync, or copyback function is taking place.A RAID set that is Partially Degraded or in a Degraded state. This update runs on drives remaining in a RAID set that is in an Offline state. For PowerVault MD32 series, MD34 series, MD36 series and MD38 series Download D417 firmware.Upgrade the drive firmware with the Modular Disk Storage Manager (MDSM) management application. Extract package to management station (server running MDSM Software)From the array management window, click Advanced > Maintenance > Download > Physical Disk Firmware….The wizard starts with instructions on how to update drive firmware If the drive has already failed due to this issue or additional help is required, contact support.
