Symptom

1 SMU install fails with reason : FAILED: Improper State./bootflash/.smu.bin not present. Please restore file for stability. 2 The following log is observed in console at WLC start: %BOOT-3-BOOTTIME_SMU_MISSING_DETECTED: R0/0: install_engine: SMU file /bootflash/.smu.bin missing and system impact will be unknown

Conditions

9800 WLC. SMU.bin file deleted without the use of "install remove" command

Workaround

To avoid this state: 1 Use install deactivate / commit / remove procedure if WLC should stay in same code 2 If WLC is to be upgraded from CCO + SMU (x) -->. CCO ( y), perform the upgrade and once WLC running in CCO (y) perform install remove file SMU(y)-filename If already on this state: clear install state <<--- WLC will request a reboot
