Symptoms
When a VMware SD-WAN 520 or 540 Edge is upgraded to 3.3.2, 3.3.2 P1 or 3.4.0, there is the potential for a kernel panic that results in the Edge rebooting every 5 minutes.Only Edge 520/540's with the Marvell script manually enabled are at risk for this issue.
Cause
The Marvell script was created as a workaround for a very rare problem on VMware SD-WAN Edge model 520 and 540's where the Edge's internal Marvell switch would lock up and stop passing traffic on LAN ports until the Edge was rebooted. The script recovers the Edge without a reboot and minimizes downtime.Unfortunately the workaround script is not compatible with the final fix for this issue included with VMware SD-WAN Releases 3.3.2 and 3.4.0. This incompatibility results in repeated kernel panics and Edge reboots when an Edge using a manually added script is upgraded.
Resolution
This issue is resolved on Edge software Releases 3.3.2 P2 and 3.4.1 and later. Upgrading the affected Edge to either of these Releases, or a subsequent release, will resolve the problem.Alternatively, if upgrading to a version with the fix is not an option, you may open a case with VMware SD-WAN Support and a Technical Support Engineer can manually deactivate the Marvell script, and this will also resolve the problem.
