This article provides best practices on how to restore an ADE device, such as an iPhone, from an iCloud backup.Note: Apple's Automated Device Enrollment (ADE) Program, formerly known as the Device Enrollment Program (DEP), helps organizations easily deploy and configure Apple devices.
Apple recommends, "When an iCloud backup is restored to the same device, all supervision and profiles come from the backup regardless of how it was configured in the Automated Device Enrollment (ADE) Program. For this reason, when restoring backups, each user should transition to a new or different device to ensure Automated Device Enrollment Program supervision and MDM enrollment are enforced." Workspace ONE UEM examples: If you configure a device to be supervised and enrolled in Workspace ONE using the Automated Device Enrollment Program, then restore a backup made when the same device was unsupervised, the device will be unsupervised. If you restore a backup made when the same device was supervised by Apple Configurator and enrolled in Workspace ONE, the device will remain supervised and enrolled, but the MDM profile will be removable because Apple Configurator cannot lock MDM enrollment. If you restore the backup to a different device that is configured for supervision and Workspace ONE enrollment via the Device Enrollment Program, the device will remain supervised and MDM enrollment will not be removable. To restore the backup on a new iOS device that is configured for supervision and MDM enrollment (Workspace ONE UEM) via ADE: 1. Turn on the new device or newly erased device. 2. Follow the instructions to select language and region.3. Tap the option to set up manually.4. Select Restore from iCloud back up and follow on-screen instructions.Note: When asked for Apple ID you will need to use the same Apple ID which was used to take the backup. Refer the table below to learn possible use cases when restoring iOS devices from an iCloud backup: Use CaseDevice 1Device 2Backup of Device 1: No device management profile and device not supervised.Device will not have a management profile, will not be supervised, and ADE profile rules will have no impact.Device will restore backup and continue in setup assistant following all ADE profile steps, including supervision.Backup of Device 1: Device management profile present and device not supervised.Device will have a management profile, will not be supervised, and ADE profile rules will have no impact.Device will restore backup and continue in setup assistant following all ADE profile steps, including supervision.Backup of Device 1: Device management profile present and device is supervised.Device will have a management profile, will be supervised by the same entity as the backup, and ADE profile rules will have no impact.Device will restore backup and continue in setup assistant following all ADE profile steps, including supervised profile.
