Symptoms
Java 7 Update 51 prevents some vCloud Director and vRealize Orchestrator (formerly known as VMware vCenter Orchestrator) features from launching.Affected features in vCloud Director 5.1 and earlier are:
The Upload Media appletThe VPN for an organization virtual data center (vDC) network
If your browser uses a version of Java prior to Java 7 Update 51, you see the message: This application will be blocked in a future Java security update because the JAR file manifest does not contain the Permissions attribute. Please contact the Publisher for more information If your browser uses Java 7 Update 51 or later, you experience these symptoms:
The vRealize Orchestrator Client fails to launch and displays the error: a general error has occurred The Upload Media utility in vCloud Director fails to launch.The vCloud Director VPN feature for an organization vDC network fails to launch.
Cause
This issue occurs because of a change to the Security Slider settings in Java 7 Update 51. For more information, see the Java 7 Update 51 Release Notes.
These changes to the Security Slider are included in the Java 7 Update 51 release:
Block Self-Signed and Unsigned applets on High Security Setting.Require Permissions Attribute for High Security Setting.Warn users of missing Permissions Attributes for Medium Security Setting.
Resolution
This is a known issue affecting vCloud Director 5.1 and earlier and all versions of vRealize Orchestrator (formerly known as VMware vCenter Orchestrator).Note: This issue does not affect vCloud Director 5.5 as the Media Upload utility is replaced with the ClientIntegrationPlugin.
To resolve the issue, add the FQDN of the affected VMware product to the Java Exception Site List (allowlist). For more information, see the Java 7 Update 51 release notes:The Exception Site List feature allows end users to run Java applets and Java Web Start applications that do not meet the latest security requirements. Rich Internet Applications that are hosted on a site in the exception site list are allowed to run with the applicable security prompts.To add the FQDN of the VMware product to the Exception Site List:
Open the Java Control Panel. For more information, see Where is the Java Control Panel on Windows?.Click the Security tab.Click Edit Site List and add the address of the product in this format: https://FQDN Include the port number if required, for example: https://FQDN:port
