Symptoms
The ESXi host fails with a purple diagnostic screenThe purple diagnostic screen displays a similar message:
Recursive panic on same CPU (cpu 16, world 2813): ip=0x41800d26cc6a randomOff=0xd200000:
#PF Exception 14 in world 2813:ntpd IP 0x41800d29b3d8 addr 0x4101bf3f9440
Debugger waiting(world 2813)
A vmkernel core dump (zdump) file is not generated.
Cause
A recursive panic occurs when the system panics while attempting to generate the purple diagnostic screen and write the core dump to disk. In this situation, a vmkernel zdump file may not available for troubleshooting purposes.
Resolution
If the Recursive Panic is reproducible, try to collect the following:
Enable serial-line logging for the ESXi host and collect console logs through the panic. For more information, see Enabling serial-line logging for an ESXi/ESXi host (1003900).Configure Network Dump Collector and try to collect dump through the panic. For more information, see ESXi Network Dump Collector in VMware vSphere 5.x/6.0 (1032051).Collecting diagnostic information for VMware ESXi after rebooting ESXi host. For more information, see Collecting diagnostic information for VMware products (1008524).
Note: To run a thorough diagnostic test on the host to check for hardware problems, contact your hardware vendor.
