This article provides licensing information about VMware vSphere Storage Appliance (VSA). Note: vSphere Storage Appliance was made End of Availability 1st April 2014. Existing VSA customers may continue to use the product with vSphere 5.5 or lower environments.
Assigning a VSA license to vCenter Server To assign a VSA license to vCenter Server: Note: Ensure that you have downloaded and installed vSphere Storage Appliance (VSA) on vCenter Server. Log in to vSphere Client. Click Home. Under the Administration section, click the Licensing icon. Click Manage vSphere Licenses. Click Add License Keys. Note: After clicking Add License Keys, you can review the license keys that you have added, as well as capacity counts, expiration dates, and labels associated with the license keys. Click Next to assign the license keys. Assign the VSA license key to the vCenter Server. Licensing Information When licensing VSA, consider these points: VSA is licensed on a per-instance basis. Each VSA instance supports up to 3 nodes. At least two nodes need to be part of a VSA deployment. VSA is supported by all vSphere 5 versions. There are no upgrades in VSA. VSA can run with Essentials plus or higher version of vSphere. VSA must be purchased for the vCenter Server edition on which it runs. The editions are: vCenter Essentials (sold only with Essentials Plus) vCenter Foundation vCenter Server VSA must be deployed on the same vCenter Server. The VSA virtual machine counts as a protected virtual machine. Enabling VSA on vCenter Server To enable VSA: Log in to the vSphere Client. Click Plug-ins and then Manage Plug-ins.You see the plug-in Manager window, which shows VSA as disabled. Right-click VSA and click Enable. Click Close. To confirm that the VSA is enabled, click Home > Datacenter. You see a tab for VSA Manager. Note: If you want to use the VSA with vCenter Server Standard edition, but have the VSA that is compatible with the vCenter Server Essentials edition, you must contact Licensing support. If you have purchased your vSphere Essentials Plus licenses before 19 September 2013, VMware provides a new license key for VSA standard without the need of trading another license. The licenses are delivered to a new folder named ADJUSTMENTS under Home folder in your Customer Connect account. The access to this folder is driven by the permissions for Home. The new adjustment folder has the same access and permissions of the HOME folder, except that this folder can be renamed and deleted by the Super User & Procurement Contact.
