After installing the December 2024 security update released December 10, 2024 (KB5048685 (https://support.microsoft.com/help/5048685)) or later, you might observe that the Windows Start menu becomes unresponsive and crashes with exception code ‘0xc0000005’. So far, our investigation has confirmed that this issue affects only organizations that have installed the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (https://docs.citrix.com/en-us/citrix-virtual-apps-desktops/technical-overview.html) client.
Devices affected by this issue might experience the symptoms below:
- Windows Start menu becomes unresponsive to mouse clicks (or)
- Application crashes with the exception code 0xc0000005 and event ID 1000 appears in the System event log with ‘Faulting application name’ as ‘StartMenuExperienceHost.exe’.
Workaround:
Citrix has documented a workaround for this issue. For details, see Start menu may stop responding if KB5048685 installed on Windows 11 22H2/23H2 VDA (https://support.citrix.com/s/article/CTX692398-start-menu-may-stop-responding-if-kb5048685-installed-on-windows-11-22h223h2-vda).
Important: Citrix’s workaround contains information about modifying the Windows registry. Before modifying the registry, make sure that you back up the registry and know how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information, see How to back up and restore the registry in Windows (https://support.microsoft.com/topic/how-to-back-up-and-restore-the-registry-in-windows-855140ad-e318-2a13-2829-d428a2ab0692).
Next Steps: Microsoft is working with Citrix to address this issue and will update this documentation once a resolution is available.
