Updates released July 25, 2023 (KB5028254 (https://support.microsoft.com/help/5028254)), or later, contain changes that might prevent pre-installed applications from updating as expected. These pre-installed applications are commonly bundled with new devices.
Bundling processes that rely on the Windows Desktop App Management CSP (configuration service provider) to track application installation and version status can be affected. As a result of this issue, applications might not appear to be installed on a device even if they are. This can result in an incorrect inventory for organizations which track installed applications across several devices.
Please note that the applications themselves are unaffected and should operate as expected.
Affected applications are expected to meet the following requirements:
- The application is a Win32 app.
- The application relies on MSI (Microsoft installer) files, and UEM (Unified endpoint management) to push the app through DM (device management) channels.
- The application has been pre-installed on a device, generally as part of new device / factory configuration.
Next steps: We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
Affected platforms:
- Client: Windows 11, version 22H2; Windows 11, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 22H2; Windows 10, version 21H2
