Symptom
A Catalyst 8200 Edge routing platform may experience an unexpected reload due to a CpuCatastrophicError.
No core files are generated during the crash.
Conditions
C8200/C8200L running a software version with the fix for CSCwa57254 (incorrect behavior of a console port (High Speed UART with DMA activated) and experiencing a reload due to a CpuCatastrophicError.
A corner condition in the low-level system firmware has been identified that may result in a CpuCatastrophicError. This has been corrected with the release of a new Rommon image.
In some cases, the problem could be triggered by incorrect memory DIMM seating.
Workaround
A new Rommon has been released and systems that experiences unexpected CpuCatastrophicError condition can be upgraded.
Note that the Rommon released for CSCwf00101 is 17.6(8r). A deficiency in the application of the fix was found and 17.6(8.1r) is the more recent Rommon with the more robust fix. Please download 17.6(8.1r) from CCO here: https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286324472/type/282046486/release/17.6(8.1r)
Specific Rommon upgrade instructions are not available for C8200, but the steps are the same as for ISR4K. Please refer to https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/access/4400/cpld/isr4400_hwfp.html#pgfId-1086477
Further Problem Description
A known trigger of CpuCatastrophicError was addressed through a software fix tracked as CSCwa57254 and is available in below IOS-XE versions onwards, so the first step would be to make sure the device is running the fixed version:
- 17.10.1a
- 17.6.5 and newer versions
- 17.9.3 and newer versions
- 17.11.1 and future releases
A second cause was identified in the low-level system firmware and Rommon 17.6(8.1r) has been released with updated firmware.
