Install a VMware license that provides vSphere and vStorage APIs.
If Free ESXi is intentionally being used, consider using Veeam Backup & Replication to back up the Guest OS of the Virtual Machines by treating them as if they are physical machines by using Veeam Agent-based backup. For more information, review: Veeam Agent Management Guide.
