Info

On an HPE ProLiant server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.8 and configured with an HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 4-port 536FLR-T Adapter for hardware iSCSi offload boot, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.8 fails to boot from the iSCSi LUN and a kernel panic will occur after the installation: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! Pid: 1, comm: init Not tainted 2.6.32-642.el6.x86_64 #1 Call Trace: [<ffffffff81546de1>] ? panic+0xa7/0x179 [<ffffffff8112b0c0>] ? perf_event_exit_task+0xc0/0x340 [<ffffffff810821b7>] ? do_exit+0x867/0x870 [<ffffffff8119b915>] ? fput+0x25/0x30 [<ffffffff81082218>] ? do_group_exit+0x58/0xd0 [<ffffffff810822a7>] ? sys_exit_group+0x17/0x20 [<ffffffff8100b0d2>] ? system_call_fastpath+0x16/0x1b

Scope

Any HPE ProLiant server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.8 and configured with an HPE FlexFabric 10Gb 4-port 536FLR-T Adapter.

Resolution

As a workaround, perform the following steps: At the end of the Operating System installation, before clicking on the Reboot button to reboot the system, go to the shell terminal using the combination keys CTRL+ALT+F2. Type the command "iscsiadm -m fw" to determine which network interface ifcfg scripts that need to change the ONBOOT, NM_CONTROLLED settings. Edit the network interface ifcfg files present in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts to set the ONBOOT value to "yes," and the NM_CONTROLLED value to "no." Save all the changes and reboot the system. During the first boot, if kdump is configured, there will be a prompt that asks to reboot or not. Do not perform a second reboot. Instead, boot to the Operating System. Repeat steps 2 and 3. Save the changes and reboot the system. The Operating System now boots successfully after every reboot. NOTE: If the kernel panic occurs during reboot, install the Operating System again with all the workaround steps listed above. This advisory will be updated when additional solutions become available.
