The HPE Edgeline e920/e920d 10Gb 2-port Mezzanine Adapters connected to the Edgeline Chassis Manager (ECM) module may encounter link instability or link down conditions. This is due to an issue with the auto-negotiation function. This issue will affect the HPE Edgeline EL8000 Converged Edge System and EL8000 Unmanaged 10G SFP+ Switch on the Edgeline Chassis Manager (ECM) module. In addition, the HPE Compute Edge Server e920/e920d Server Blades are affected when (configured with the Edgeline e920 10Gb 2-port Mezzanine Adapter) and running firmware version 26.31.1014.

IMPORTANT NOTE:The following warning only applies when updating from HPE Edgeline EL8000 10Gb Chassis Switch firmware version 27.0 when coupled with 10Gb 2-port Mezzanine Adapter firmware version 26.31.1014.!WARNING!: Downtime for the entire EL8000 chassis will be required to perform the firmware upgrades below. This is necessary because of dependencies in the 10Gb Mezz NIC firmware and EL8000 Chassis Switch firmware that will cause the 10Gb server links to be down until both firmware updates are complete. Later versions of Chassis Switch, Manager and Network Adapter will not have this requirement. To resolve the issue, download the firmware update from the link below:Mellanox Firmware Package (FWPKG) for HPE Edgeline e920 ConnectX-6Lx 10Gb 2-port Mezzanine Adapter (HPE Part Number P40899-B21) Version: 26.41.1001 (17 Sep 2024)The following Release Notes are available:HPE Edgeline EL8000 Chassis Manager 2.4 Release NotesThe firmware version recipe must be followed:The HPE Edgeline e920 10GbE 2-port Network Mezzanine Kit (or Edgeline e920/e920d ConnectX-6Lx 10Gb 2-port Mezzanine Adapter) Firmware version 26.41.1001.The EL8000 Chassis Manager (ECM) version 2.4 (includes the EL8000 10Gb switch firmware to version 2.0.3)In addition to the firmware updates, a parameter (QuadEn) on the e920 10Gb 2-port Mezzanine NIC must also be modified.Summary of Steps:Use Mellanox Firmware Tools (MFT) to set QuadEn=1.Perform the "Auxiliary Power Reset" (Auxilliary Reset) on the e920 server blade.Update with the e920 Mezz NIC MLX firmware using the FWPKG file.Backup the EL8000 ECM configurations settings.Update ECM/EL8000 switch firmware.Confirm the 10Gb e920 Mezz NIC link status in the OS after all updates have been completed.Procedure for MFT:Some VMware installations do not have the Mellanox Firmware Tools (MFT) installed, so first determine if you have MFT installed and if it is version 4.29 by entering /opt/mellanox.If it is not installed, download MFT fromNVIDIA Firmware Tools (MFT)and use one of the following versions:ESXi VersionVMware VIBs7.0 U3Mellanox-MFT-Tools_4.28.0.703-1OEM.703.0.0.18644231_23818916.zipMellanox-NATIVE-NMST_4.28.0.703-1OEM.703.0.0.18644231_23818975.zip8.0 U1Mellanox-MFT-Tools_4.28.0.881-1OEM.801.0.0.21495797_24064250-package.zipMellanox-NATIVE-NMST_4.28.0.881-1OEM.801.0.0.21495797_24064126-package.zip8.0 U2Mellanox-MFT-Tools_4.28.0.881-1OEM.801.0.0.21495797_24064250-package.zipMellanox-NATIVE-NMST_4.28.0.881-1OEM.801.0.0.21495797_24064126-package.zip8.0 U3Mellanox-MFT-Tools_4.28.0.881-1OEM.801.0.0.21495797_24064250-package.zipMellanox-NATIVE-NMST_4.28.0.881-1OEM.801.0.0.21495797_24064126-package.zipOnce the MFT is installed, perform these steps:Step 1.)Go into the ESX CLI prompt and run these commands:cd /opt/mellanox/bin./flint -d c1:00.0 -ocr hw queryThen this should appear:-W- Firmware flash cache access is enabled. Running in this mode may cause the firmware to stall.Hardware Info:HwDevId 534HwRevId 0x0Flash Firmware Information:Type MX25LxxxTotalSize 0x2000000Banks 0x1SectorSize 0x1000WriteBlockSize 0x10CmdSet 0x80QuadEn 0Flash0.WriteProtected Top,1-SectorsJEDEC_ID 0x1920c2Determine the QuadEn value:If the value for QuadEn is "0" then set it to "1".If QuadEn=1 then this step can be skipped. To set QuadEn=1 run this command while in the /opt/mellanox/bin directory:./flint -d c1:00.0 -ocr hw set QuadEn=1Optional: verify QuadEn=1:./flint -d c1:00.0 -ocr hw query-W- Firmware flash cache access is enabled. An AUX power resetis required on compute blades after QuadEn=1 setting is completed.Note: The AUX power reset will interrupt the Integrated Lighs-Out (iLO) connection requiring the user to log back into iLO after the reset is complete. For the AUX power reset, go into the ECM Web GUI in the Blades sub menu:Under each of the blades, find the button for AUX power reset and click on it:Continue to perform the rest of the steps for each of the server blades in the enclosure:Step 3.) Update to version 26.41.1001 for the e920 10G 2p Mezzanine NIC with MLX firmware from the FWPKG file.Note: Download the firmware on the page that opens and use the Installation Instructions available from this location:Mellanox Firmware Package (FWPKG) for HPE Edgeline e920 ConnectX-6Lx 10Gb 2-port Mezzanine Adapter (HPE part number P40899-B21)Step 4.) Backup the ECM configurations settings by logging into the ECM Web GUI. Go to Administration, Backup & Restore, then click "Backup." The configuration file will be saved to your default downloads directory.Note: The EL8000 ECM firmware update will immediately terminate and exit to the UEFI System Configuration menu if the Secure Boot is enabled on the server blade being used to perform the ECM firmware update (the server where the ISO is mounted). To resolve this, disable Secure Boot.Step 5.) Update ECM/EL8000 Unmanaged 10G SFP+ Switch Firmware using the bootable .ISO image mounted on one of the EL8000 server blade iLO virtual media.Boot the blade to the .ISO image and allow the installation to complete. After the installation is complete, reboot the server.Download the rest of the updates:HPE Edgeline Chassis Manager Base Image for HPE Edgeline EL8000 Converged Edge System Version 2.4 (23 Sep 2024)The ECM upgrade procedure is provided in theHPE Edgeline EL8000 Chassis Manager 2.4 Release Notes.NOTE: The Edgeline Chassis Manager (ECM) configuration settings may be reset to defaults (network settings, login credentials) by the ECM upgrade. When the settings reset, the configuration settings will need to be restored using the backup configuration file created in Step 2 after the ECM upgrade is complete. After the ECM download, use the default login credentials:Login User Name:AdministratorPassword:passwordThe default network protocol:DHCPStep 6.)After all updates have been complete, confirm the NIC link status in the OS.
